Attophotonics employs laser techniques to create colored labels on the surfaces of polymers, metal, ceramics, artificial and natural stones, leather, lacquer or anti-corrosion coatings. Attophotonics has developed novel pigments and dyes for laser labelling and provides know-how and facilities for production and use of these pigments and coatings including necessary laser equipment.
Lasered labels are stable over years (no bleaching), exhibit high contrast, do not contain allergenic reactive organic dye components, are machine-readable, exhibit extreme thermal stability and can be combined with barcode and RFID. The color-fast coatings are ideal for products that are extensively exposed to sunlight.

CO2 Lasers

CO2 lasers belong to the most widely used and most powerful industrial lasers. Attophotonics’ CO2-lasers are electrically stimulated gas lasers. The 4-level lasers operate in the intermediate infrared (IIR) range at a wavelength of about 10.6µm with a maximum effiency of 40%.
A laser interacts with materials in 4 kinds of ways: by heating, melting, evaporation and ionisation. Which effect is used in laser machining depends on the application (welding, brazing, cutting, drilling, labelling) as well as on the material.

In the range of 10 to 100W the CO2 laser is used for cutting, engraving or perforating thin organic materials (plastics, textiles, leather, wood, etc.) – in the pulsed mode for etching and cutting inorganic materials (glass, ceramics, stone, …). To yield a clean outline, spreading of heat in a second dimension must be prevented. This is made possible by high energy density. It also makes cut fibers melt into each other, which is exceedingly useful for cutting tissue as it prevents unravelling. Too far penetration of heat into the material must be prevented, however, as it may cause damages to structure and hand.

Laser Transfer & Laser Colors

‘Laser embossing’ of plastics allows labelling a material by locally changing its color without impairing the surface quality. For instance, black-and-white images can be created by etching away a light-impermeable layer and thereby exposing a base material of different color.
